Can You Claim Delay Repay Without a Paper Ticket?
Published 22 September 2026 • Delayo. Guides
A surprising number of people don't claim Delay Repay because they assume they need a physical paper ticket in hand. You don't — most UK passengers now travel on e-tickets or contactless anyway, and operators have accepted alternatives to a paper ticket for years.
What counts as proof of travel
According to National Rail's own guidance, you can use any of the following in place of a paper ticket:
- An eTicket receipt or booking confirmation that shows your booking reference.
- A photo of your ticket taken on your phone or tablet, if you have a paper ticket but no longer have the physical copy.
- A receipt showing your journey details, including the price paid, if your ticket itself has been lost.
- A statement from your Oyster or contactless account, if you travelled using pay-as-you-go contactless (relevant mainly on TfL Rail-overlap routes).
What this means in practice
If you booked online or through an app, your confirmation email or the app's "my tickets" section is normally all the evidence you need — you don't need to have kept a barcode or a printed slip. If you paid by contactless and don't have a formal ticket at all, your bank or TfL journey statement can stand in for one.
Whichever you use, the same journey details still need to be identifiable: the date, the route (departure and arrival stations), and — ideally — the price paid, since that's what your compensation percentage is calculated against.
What if you genuinely have nothing at all?
If you can't produce any of the above, contact the specific operator's customer relations team directly — some can look up journeys made with a registered railcard or account, or a card used for contactless pay-as-you-go, even without a saved receipt. It's worth asking before assuming a claim isn't possible.
How Delayo. handles this
When you use Delayo., you upload a photo of your ticket (or the relevant booking confirmation) and we handle formatting it into your Letter of Authority and claim — start your claim here to see exactly what's needed for your journey, or check your specific operator's page first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the original paper ticket to claim Delay Repay?
No. A photo of the ticket, an eTicket/booking confirmation showing your booking reference, or a receipt with your journey details are all accepted alternatives.
I travelled using contactless pay-as-you-go — can I still claim?
Yes — a statement from your Oyster or contactless account showing the journey can be used as proof of travel.
What if I’ve lost my ticket completely and have no photo or receipt?
Contact the train operator’s customer relations team directly — some can trace journeys made on a registered railcard, account or contactless card even without a saved receipt.
